The History and the Future of Lingerie
The Future and History of Lingerie
The lingerie garments that retailers sell today can be considered relatively new arrivals to the clothing industry. A women’s undergarments had always been large, unattractive and used as a mere functional piece rather than something to complement her form, however, around the middle of the twentieth century that all began to change.
However, around the 1960s women’s underwear started to become pretty. The new garments were much smaller and delicate looking than their former counter parts, such as the girdle or large bulky fitting bras. There was a distinctly feminine look to underwear now, which was in stark contrast with the utilitarian garments that women had thus far been forced to use.
Today women often wear modern feminine lingerie as part of their daily undergarments. Although most women have some “everyday” undergarments and some more attractive “special occasion” lingerie, even the everyday undergarments are much more visually appealing than those of 50 years ago.
What Defines Lingerie?
Lingerie is very common today and at times it can be hard to tell the difference between it and some of the everyday undergarments. Many people are confused as to which pieces should be called lingerie items and which to term, just plain old underwear.
In general, lingerie can be described as the fancy undergarments that are made of high-quality material and are decorative as well as functional. In fact, they are often more decorative than they are functional.
Everyday underwear is usually made of cotton, will feature wider waistbands and have a more generous cut. With these practical factors included in everyday underwear for women, they will feel much more comfortable then if they wore lingerie everyday.
Have the Evolutions of Women’s Undergarments Help Them?
Many people believe that the evolution of undergarments has led to women being more comfortable with their sexuality. No longer confined to huge cotton panties and uncomfortable bras, women now have the choice to look sexy under their clothing no matter what they wear on the outside.
Women who previously had no confidence in their bodies are now able to enjoy the wonders of push-up bras and panties with padded bottoms to help smooth and enhance their silhouette.
Does Today’s Underwear have a Future?
There are people in the fashion industry that believe that somewhere in the near future undergarments will move even more to the outside of the garments, verses remaining on the inside of them. The change has been coming about for some time now and over the past few years; women have been letting their bra straps show while wearing tank tops, something that was completely unheard of in the past.
In future years, will lingerie take the place of more conventional wardrobe pieces? In Europe this new phase has already begun and women tend to shop for sexy lingerie items to complement an outfit, rather then just wear it as an undergarment.
